Welcome to In the Shadow of Vesuvius
As I prepare for my time in Italy as a visiting scholar at the American Academy in Rome, I am hoping to update my friends, family, and anyone else who is interested about my research and findings in Rome.
Why a newsletter?
I have always enjoyed writing, and have penned many posts on the BCV Architecture + Interiors Blog and on an earlier version of our firm blog called PigBlog.
I have also authored Design Legacy of John Marsh Davis: Early Career: Wood Expressionism 1961-1979, which was published March 2023. This book pays long-overdue homage to Marsh Davis, an accomplished, prolific designer who flew under the radar, despite contributing remarkable and significant buildings to the San Francisco Bay Area’s cultural landscape.
This newsletter is simply a new iteration of the blog focusing on my time in Rome.
About Me
A co-founding Principal of BCV Architecture + Interiors, Hans Baldauf, FAIA, LEED AP, has worked across a variety of project types including mixed-use developments, flagship stores, residences, market halls, restaurants and specialty food shops and wineries. A long-standing interest in the public realm has spurred BCV to pursue a wide variety of projects that at their core enrich civic life, including the San Francisco Ferry Building Marketplace, the retail and entertainment districts of Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, and interventions on behalf of the Good Food Awards. Hans strongly advocates for a holistic vision of sustainability drawing inspiration from the Slow Food Movement’s tenets: its celebratory aspects that constitute “good” and its insistence upon “clean” and “fair.” Hans has taught architecture at Yale University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Notre Dame, where he served as visiting faculty at their Rome Studies program. Hans has also served as past chairman of the Maybeck Foundation as well as on various boards including the Friends of the Bancroft Library and the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA, now Foodwise).
